Houdini Introduction

What is “Houdini work”?

The main industries is used in are Film&TV, Game Development, Motion Graphics, and Virtual Reality. But first, let’s see what “Houdini work” really is. In the past, it’s work may focus on effect simulation work. But this is often not the case today.
Houdini artists now take advantage of the tool’s procedural capabilities in diverse roles including CG generalists, FX TDs, software engineers, animators, modelers, character artists, lighters and pipeline developers.

This is because Houdini is used in almost every stage of the visual effects and animation pipeline, which is why the demand for experienced artists has grown rapidly.
For example, the memorable Quicksilver mansion rescue sequence in “X-Men: Apocalypse” uses Houdini effects and flame simulation in slow motion-thanks to the visual effects of Rising Sun Pictures in Adelaide, Australia, which is also The Quicksilver kitchen scene in “Future Days.”
Both sequences demonstrate the powerful features of Houdini’s front and middle, but like many other studios, Rising Sun has been using the Houdini tool set to meet a wider range of visual effects requirements.

At any given time the studio has between 20 and 30 artists in its effects department, all of which touch the software. Given today’s high demand, getting the right artists has now become a critical priority. “Skilled Houdini artists are always hard to come by ,” says Digital Domain FX artist Steven Ong.

it is for serious procedural and dynamic animation. It attracts programmer types. If you learn it well you will get mostly dynamics jobs to do. Fire, smoke, explosions and destruction.

We also use it to do lookdev, grooming, scene assembly and lighting(Vray and Mantra). Previously we used Maya for these tasks, but it really makes more sense to do them in Houdini since it is a lot more robust when building a good pipeline in big studio.
